Excerpt: “I have never in my professional life ever spoken out in this way. I certainly have my own opinions and have a yard sign at elections and make sure I vote. But I spoke out because he represents the greatest threat to American democracy since the Second World War. He is so fundamentally un-American, and not only because he is unqualified, but because he is mentally unsuited. He represents a kind of strong man, narcissistic thing that represents the potential death of the Republic. All of my films are about the United States and all of them are about trying to understand how it works and how it doesn’t work, and I just felt compelled to speak out.”

Was Ken Burns right about this? To a large degree I think he was. I hope we can prevent him from causing as much damage. – rjc

  1. This is a great share Robert. Thank you! My Mom and most all of her generation—i.e. born during or right after The Great Depression and into WW2—love, love, LOVE and respect Ken Burns for his documentary work, career, and expertise on a ‘true America and Americans.’

This will shock my mother and her live-in partner, who is a great admirer of Burns, but is also a staunch NRA advocate, tRump supporter, hardline Republican, believes ALL Repub Imperialist-American propaganda, and moderately to Conservative religious man. This is GOLD for me Sir! Thank you a hundred times!

  2. Have you seen The Intruder (William Shatner, 1962)? I was watching clips of Trump’s incitement to hatred this week and it occurred to me he’s modelled himself on that Shatner character – either consciously or subconsciously.

  3. During the run up to the 2016 elections, my wife watched an online Japanese current affairs program that compared the speeches of Hitler prior to his rise to power and Trump. Unfortunately the program was in Japanese, and the words of both Hitler and Trump were drowned out by the Japanese speech-over narration, so I can’t make a direct comparison myself. However, according to my wife, one could be forgiven in thinking that they both had the same speech writer. While it was clear to me that Hitler was the more charismatic, the response of the audiences were alarmingly similar.

If the pattern continues this time round, I do fear that democracy in the US is doomed, which doesn’t bode well for the rest of the “free world”. I hope I’m wrong.
