MUST READ. This will surprise many readers.
My grandfather was a strong GOP supporter during the days of his life….and in 1956 he worked and voted for Ike…..if he were alive today he would be a strong Left progressive…..why would I say that?
First of all let’s look at the platform of Ike and the GOP in 1956……
Or if you prefer….I have written about this platform and the GOP in the past here on IST……https://lobotero.com/2018/11/06/where-has-the-gop-gone/
If you read the platform closely you will see just how “liberal” the party was in those days……(I miss those days)…….
Now you may ask….what happened to the GOP?
The year is 1971 and the Nixon nominee for the Supreme Court, Lewis Powell, wrote a memo to be forever known as the Powell Memo.
It was 1971 and…

The NZ Labour Party underwent a similar dramatic shift in the 1980s when, as government, it introduced reforms based on neoliberal economic policies. That put them to the right of the previous centre-right National Party government. National leapfrogged Labour further to the right when they were returned to government, and Labour has been slowly drifting towards the left since the 1990s, to the point where under the leadership of Jacinda Ardern, they are going to introduce the concept of wellbeing into the upcoming budget in May.

Very good. Ardern is well liked around the world. The 1980s neoliberal movement was spearheaded by Reagan/Thatcher and it spread across the globe.

It shows that once the GOP had really good men in its ranks. Now it is just a shadow of its former self

Yes, partly. Did you read the section of the article which discusses the 1971 Lewis Powell memo?

Yes just now skimmed it..fascinating and frightening.
I didn’t catch any religious suggestions of control, however.
But this small bit says a lot.
“The Big Lie Gambit is described in the Wikipedia entry on the Big Lie. The key quote is from Hitler’s Mein Kampf:
All this was inspired by the principle—which is quite true within itself—that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods.”

Yes, the “big lie” – a.k.a. propaganda.
The Powell memo was focused squarely on advancing neoliberalism and corporatism; however, political leaders such as Reagan exploited religious conservatism as a means to further that goal. So, the driver was laissez-faire capitalism while one of its best political tools was (and still is) religion.
