The Associated Press is reporting that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has agreed to settle claims that it cheated on emissions testing, paying more than $650 million in fines to federal and state governments as well as compensation for owners of the affected vehicles.

There have been claims against FCA, similar to those successfully made against Volkswagen in recent years, related to diesel-engined vehicles, although it is not yet known what the settlement will cover. In 2017, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a civil suit against FCA about an alleged “defeat device” that would circumvent emission controls in Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 models from 2014–2016 equipped with diesel engines.
