WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired Andrew McCabe, the FBI’s former No. 2 official who was deeply involved in the agency’s investigations of Hillary Clinton and Russia’s role in the 2016 U.S. election and was repeatedly criticized by President Donald Trump, he said on Friday.
“Based on the report of the Inspector General, the findings of the FBI Office of Professional Responsibility, and the recommendation of the Department’s senior career official, I have terminated the employment of Andrew McCabe effective immediately,” Sessions said.
McCabe’s dismissal came two days before his 50th birthday, when he would have been eligible to retire from the Federal Bureau of Investigation with his full pension.

From McCabe’s statement in response to his firing:
“Here is the reality: I am being singled out and treated this way because of the role I played, the actions I took, and the events I witnessed in the aftermath of the firing of James Comey. The release of this report was accelerated only after my testimony to the House Intelligence Committee revealed that I would corroborate former Director Comey’s accounts of his discussions with the President. The OIG’s focus on me and this report became a part of an unprecedented effort by the Administration, driven by the President himself, to remove me from my position, destroy my reputation, and possibly strip me of a pension that I worked 21 years to earn. The accelerated release of the report, and the punitive actions taken in response, make sense only when viewed through this lens. Thursday’s comments from the White House are just the latest example of this.“
So when will he fire Mueller? And destroy any premise of a functioning democracy?

Cindy, I suspect that if he is going to fire Mueller it would happen fairly soon because the investigation has already crossed Trump’s “red-line” (i.e. looking into his business dealings).

I think this is cruel. Why fire someone two days to retirement?

Because tRumpsky is a heartless bastard who is so frickin’ afraid he’s going to be “found out” that he’ll do whatever necessary to keep himself “safe.” IOW, he’s an a-hole! Of the first degree.

I think I agree. Why deny a guy his pension he is worked for half his life? Can he appeal or there is no chance he will win? It seemed so cruel to me.

It IS cruel! Waiting TWO MORE DAYS would have not disturbed a single hair on tRumpky’s surgically altered head, but because he is a Class A Prick, he did what he did. Once a bully, always a bully.

Do you see Sessions last to the end of this first term? Serving under a guy like tRump, one should be careful with how they treat others

Noel, firing someone two days before retirement is pure political retribution from a raging megalomaniac.

Robert, any idea when this shitshow will end? Every day there’s head-shaking antics. I am really hoping tRump ends up in jail, where he belongs.

Carmen, it’s difficult to predict what will happen and when. But, one thing is certain. Either our republic will survive and put an end to Trump’s presidential megalomania, or it won’t. And, the possibility of the latter is quite terrifying for me.

Robert, the whole world should be terrified of that prospect. 😦

Eugene, Trump will fire Sessions as soon as he doesn’t obey him anymore.

McCabe’s statement is pretty damning of tRump. We are now living in the Banana Republic of the U.S.–sponsored by Russia.

In the meantime, the GOP sits on its hands. Holding onto power trumps loyalty to their country.

Sooner or later, Republicans will be forced off the tightrope they are straddling now. When that happens, our republic will do the right thing and survive… or, it won’t.
