The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Maryland, is one of several challenging Trump’s ties to his business ventures and his refusal to divest from them. The suits allege that foreign governments’ use of Trump’s hotels and other properties violates the Constitution’s emoluments clause, which bans the president’s acceptance of foreign gifts and money without Congress’ permission.

What distresses me is that the GOP continues to support and empower him. When ‘capital’ secures the State in its grasp, the very foundations of our nation are at risk.

During the Watergate scandal, Republicans steadfastly supported Nixon right up until the moment when impeachment became an unavoidable reality. Then, they turned on him and forced his resignation.

Howard Baker was the republican who caused that change in the party, if I remember correctly. Washington insiders cleverly decided to blame everything on Nixon and pretend he was a lunatic and that everyone else was honest and hard working, simply looking out for their constituents. The political “cleanup” after Watergate was done with masterful precision and should not be forgotten. As a matter of fact, it should be studied to avoid the same thing from happening again.
At that time the divisions in politics were between the branches of government while today it’s between parties. It’s an amazing change that I don’t see discussed. It’s been a fundamental shift in how Washington works – much more dangerous today, in my opinion.

How independent are your courts?

Trump is loading up Federal courts with right-wing whackos who support his agenda. He’s done more to destroy our Democracy in a year than the British did the whole time they kept us as one of their colonies.

Jeff, I don’t know but the courts are the last bulwark against a rogue state. If they are gone, you’ll have nothing left
