Two men were stabbed to death and one injured Friday on a light-rail train in Portland, Ore., after they tried to intervene when another passenger began “ranting and raving” and shouting anti-Muslim hate speech at two young women, police said.

Police identified the suspect early Saturday morning as 35-year-old Jeremy Joseph Christian, of north Portland. Christian is being held without bail on two counts of aggravated murder, one count of attempted murder, two counts of intimidation in the second degree and one count of possession of a restricted weapon as a felon.

  1. Tragic. My guess: Spiraling economic inequality and discriminating hate (encouraged and condoned by the U.S. President) combine to push an already mentally disturbed man over the edge.

    Good men, who stuck their necks out to help others, were killed. I wonder if Donald Trump will declare them “losers.”

  2. When we stand up for inclusive values, we put our reputations and lives at risk. A big hug and thank you to the families of those good men who said “no” to hate speech. Their pain of losing their loved ones now joins the collective pain of a nation whose strength lies in violence.
