I don’t know what to make of this story.  It could just be an odd coincidence that’s being politically exploited by conservatives and their media operatives.  I’ll simply report the currently available facts.

On July 11th, Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich was beaten and gunned down on the 2100 block of Flagler Place NW, Washington, D.C.  Police Chief Cathy Lanier said that he may have been killed in an attempted robbery, but Rich’s cellphone, wallet, and watch were found with his body.

On July 22nd, WikiLeaks released some 20,000 emails hacked from the DNC which exposed collusion between some DNC officials (including chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz), the Hillary Clinton campaign, and some allied media professionals, to sway the primary election contest against rival candidate Bernie Sanders.  Previously, The Washington Post reported that Russian government hackers had penetrated the DNC computer network.  I haven’t been able to discover the exact date when WikiLeaks first obtained possession of the leaked emails.  If anyone knows this information, please post it in the comment section.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has refused to identify the source of the leak.  Speculation has suggested that Rich was the insider source;  but, so far that’s all it is – just speculation.

At the time of the murder, Rich was talking on his cellphone with his girlfriend.  Two days prior, he had posted a Facebook plea against gun violence.  The area around his neighborhood has experienced recent violent robberies.  There were no eyewitnesses to Rich’s murder.

Additional speculation has suggested that Rich had been in contact with the FBI, that he had direct ties to the Clintons, and that he had developed a close relationship with environmentalists working for the Sanders campaign.  No evidence is available to verify any of these claims.

  1. “Rich was the second deceased individual “connected” to Clinton by WhatDoesItMean.com and the third inaccurately reported as endangered by the candidate. The same outlet falsely claimed hacker Guccifer (Marcel Lazăr Lehel) was missing and presumed dead after he purportedly hacked into Clinton’s e-mail, and just prior to that the site claimed former UN official John Ashe had been murdered on the eve of his providing scheduled testimony against Clinton. Guccifer was confirmed alive and well by officials at the facility in which he was housed, and a federal prosecutor’s office affirmed Ashe’s legal troubles were in no way connected to Clinton.

A common thread between the three rumors was a blogger known by the nom de plume “Sorcha Faal.” RationalWiki describes Faal’s WhatDoesItMean.com conspiracy site as “sensational” and “outrageous”:

RationalWiki: “Sorcha Faal is the alleged author of an ongoing series of “reports” published at WhatDoesItMean.com, whose work is of such quality that even other conspiracy nutters don’t think much of it.”
