Elizabeth Schmidt talked about how foreign intervention influenced emerging nations in Africa during the Cold War. She spoke about how former colonial powers dealt with these countries as they gained independence, looking at case studies including Egypt’s nationalization of the Suez Canal in 1956. She also talked about tensions within the U.S. government over how to respond to Africa’s decolonization.
