Black students are four times as likely to be suspended from charter schools as white students, according to a new analysis of federal education data. And students with disabilities, the study found, are suspended two to three times the rate of nondisabled students in charter schools.

These inequities are similar to those in traditional public schools, where black and disabled students are disproportionately disciplined for even minor infractions, and as early as preschool — although on average, charter schools suspend pupils at slightly higher rates than traditional public schools.

  1. I’m very curious about the part that says black and disabled students are disproportionately disciplined “as early as preschool”, because we don’t think of preschool teachers as disciplinarians. Preschoolers are about four years of, they’re learning how to write their names and read basic words…they don’t know how the world works, they don’t have long attention spans, they don’t have a lot of self control…that’s what that age group is. For a teacher to discipline ANY kid that age for “a minor infraction” is ridiculous. It makes me wonder who these charter schools are hiring, whose care they’re entrusting people’s children into.

    • I’ve posted extensively on the charter school privatization scheme that is undermining public education in America. Its motivations are fundamentally anti-government, anti-labor, and anti-poor, and anti-secular. What we’re seeing here from this study (and many others) is just the tip of a growing authoritarian iceberg.

  3. Robert, I agree with you entirely on your reply above: “charter school privatization scheme that is undermining public education in America. Its motivations are fundamentally anti-government, anti-labor, and anti-poor, and anti-secular. ” I think parents are so busy with trying to make ends meet, they do not have time to look into the politics of what is occurring. Young people without families are not concerned, so they are unaware. It doesn’t affect them. Unfortunately, people are not paying attention—and one day, it will be too late…especially, if the conservative party of this country continues to spread its unfounded fear, its bigotry and racism. It is amazing to me how racist our country is, and people do not even realize they are racist! I hear people say things that are purely and clearly racist–and they do not blink an eye. There are too many people who are less and less educated, because we are not allowed to teach anymore. The Charter schools do not want critical thinkers…the GOP doesn’t either.
