By Tanya (a Secular Jurist author)

I recently received this message in an email from a group called Americans for Responsible Solutions, of which I am a member. It was started by Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her husband to fight for gun control laws:

Victims of domestic violence and stalking are at an unacceptable risk of gun violence. In fact, 30.5% of people in New York killed by their intimate partners were murdered with a gun. That number is unacceptable.

But there’s a bill in Congress that will make it much more difficult for convicted stalkers and abusers to own a gun. Next week, for the first time in history, the Senate will hold a hearing on the links between gun violence and domestic violence.

People need to know the harsh realities of guns and domestic violence if we’re going to change the law. As it stands, the current law doesn’t protect women who aren’t married to their abusers, nor does it protect victims of stalkers. It’s way too easy for thousands of stalkers and abusers to buy or own a gun — and many aren’t even subject to background checks. By spreading the word about how many people are killed by their intimate partners with guns, we can put pressure on Congress to help reduce gun violence.

It’s baffling to me why anyone already convicted of abuse or stalking would be allowed access to a gun. Getting a restraining order is notoriously difficult for any woman, no matter how afraid she is of a man. Verbal threats made by a potentially dangerous person aren’t enough in many cases to require police intervention. If fearful women could at least be assured that dangerous people in their lives are prohibited from owning guns, that would surely provide some relief to frayed nerves.

The email also asks supporters of this gun control bill to post the above image to their Facebook and Twitter accounts. Spread the word!

  1. Tanya, thanks for bringing awareness about this. I currently live in South Carolina.

“South Carolina once again has been ranked the worst in the nation when it comes to men killing women.

The state’s rate of females murdered by males … was more than double the national average, according to a report released Tuesday by the Violence Policy Center in Washington.

The Violence Policy Center’s report said guns were the most common weapon used to kill women.”

    • Victoria, I’m just curious… why are you living in such a regressive state like South Carolina?

FYI: Tanya will respond to your comment but she is very busy these days.

      • I moved here because my now ex-husband was from SC, and I have family here, too, though they are not SC natives. My brother-in-law is a professor at a university in the city I currently reside. As you know, I lost my business due to the economy, and when that happens it’s very difficult to get back on your feet. Being an atheist in a Christian fundamentalist state also makes it difficult to find work making a living wage. It’s not something I broadcast, but word gets around. When I do get back on my feet — I’m outta here. 😉

  2. Robert – Thank you for posting this important blog. Many of us know what it’s like to be stalked by an individual(s) with a weapon(s) and more than ready to use them. These individuals have lost their moral fiber. There’s nothing (in my opinion) that equates to the mortal fear of being stalked by someone with a weapon and they are ready to return to prison as they’ve lost all judgement. They will kill regardless of the cost.

    I’m reblogging your post @ http://sheridegrom.wordpress.com.

  3. Reblogged this on Sheri de Grom and commented:
There aren’t many things I can think of that equal the fear of being stalked. I experienced this fear first hand during the time I lived and worked in DC. My work was not to make friends but neither did I plan to encounter individuals believing they had nothing left to lose. Responsible gun ownership is a must if our nation is to become civilized on any level. It’s the criminal with the guns and not the mentally ill that need heightened regulation on gun ownership. Yes, some mentally ill slide through the cracks but nothing closely related to the criminal element in today’s society.

    • I’ve never been stalked but I know women who have, and the fear they describe is similar to what you’ve described. So I am very much hoping that this legislation gets passed. It’s about time!!!

  4. Important topic. We have a case in South Africa, the Oscar Pistorius trial, where the prosecutor thinks the victim was shot because of relationship problems, and the defense says he thought there was an intruder and shot because of feeling vulnerable to being stalked/harmed because of high profile status and had received threats in the past.

Either way, a terrible death that has impacted on the lives of both people.

  5. Thank you for your advocacy. Thankfully, in Australia, our society isn’t armed. Men still find a way to kill their intimate partners, but it’s not as easy to commit these murders. (We have one death a week, according to estimates). With guns, the genie is out of the bottle.

    • You just gave us Americans a perfect example of how much safer a society is without guns. It is much, much easier to kill someone with a gun than with any other weapon or tool.

    • Thanks for sharing the article. I just read it- very, very scary!! How is it possible that the NRA now has power over the courts and the government??? Guns are absolutely a public health issue, and should be treated as such. Gun violence will only GET WORSE after this ruling.

“Stop gun violence against women,” reads the message at the end of a 30-second TV spot. The grisly ad was produced by the newly formed gun violence group Everytown for Gun Safety, and the it will run in three states where Republican senators are vulnerable to pressure from their constituents on gun safety reform.”

Trigger warning regarding the 30 sec TV ad in the article.
