I don’t think many people get that yet. Many (probably a majority) of Americans consider humans as superior genetically and spiritually to all other living things, so most people can’t picture humans going extinct. But it will happen if we stay on the path we’re on.

Human civilization – as we’ve come to know it since the Industrial Revolution – will likely go extinct in the coming decades because it is unsustainable (see: Growth Shock by Robert Marston Fanney). Whether or not a drastically reduced number of human beings survive (e.g. our wealthy elites) is a mute point in my opinion.
