In a blatantly partisan 5-4 ruling by the conservative majority, the U.S. Supreme Court has struck down key provisions of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. In effect, it has legitimized the return of systematic voter discrimination and suppression that plagued the American South for a century after the Civil War. Last March, this blog explained why overturning the nearly 50-year precedent of voting rights protections would be a “despicable” act by the Supreme Court. Today, this author has never been more ashamed to be an American.
Here are the names of the five cowardly justices who supported this ill-conceived and malicious decision by the court: John Roberts, Samuel Alito, Anthony Kennedy, Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas.
